Three Generations
Some things just run in the family. Like freckles, for instance. Personality traits, too. And horsemanship. Or, in the case of Lynn Saunders’ family, horsewomanship.
Saunders, her daughter, Denny Ralls, and 14-year-old granddaughter, Deven Riggins, share something many families share, a love of horses. But it’s what this three generation team does with horses that makes their story unique. All three women barrel race — against each other.
The story begins with Saunders, who by her early childhood was telling anyone who cared to ask she was going to be a jockey. (More….)

How fun!
I used to ride poles and barrels. After the first race, I loosened the belly cinch to let my quarter horse breathe easier. Next race, got to the first barrel and noticed myself slipping, by the 2nd barrel, I would have been on the ground had we not trotted to the jeers and guffaws of the crowd. Needless to say: never did that again.
Riders should consider helmets. Many brain-injuries occur from falls off horses - most notably, many of us watched the demise of Christopher Reeve.

I thought this story was entertaining and inspirational. It was heartwarming to read of the family bond, encouragement, and support these three generations of women give each other, despite the competitive factor. I love the picture of the barrel race in motion! As you look at it, you can almost hear the sounds that would accompany such a breath-taking ride. I don’t know much about this sport, but it seems it would take a talented rider and a talented horse to stay upright during those sharp turns! I don’t know for a fact, but it looks like the horse may enjoy this as much as the rider.
Yes, it was fun to step into the world of barrel racing for a few minutes - something I’ve never done myself. I say “hats off” to those ladies who aspire to be World Champion and hang in there come rain or shine, even injury at times, but have the spirit and determination to keep going! And “hats off” to the writer, who gave us a glimpse of the exciting world of Rodeo Barrel Racing.

Hello, what a nice day this turned out to be and your article was the sunshine of the day. The way you put actions into word is such a wonderful way for those of us who have never even been in the saddle, much less upon a horse. I have been in the saddle , but nothing like the feel I get as I read the article ’s you write, I think I can even smell & taste the dust. Looking forward to your next article, keep me on your list, and the very best of the Holiday’s to you and yours, Love & Prayers , Margaret

Amazing story, Karen. Thanks for sharing. I just wish we had something even resembling rodeo over here…
